Final Poem Space
My final project portrays the feeling of isolation. When I read the poem it gave me a couple of emotions that i took out of it. The stongest was the feeling of lonliness. In my space the reader cannot be seen from the front or back. To enter the space you have to go down some stairs to find that from the front the space is closed of but when you sit on the bench you can look up through the slots inbetween the elements. The poem alone had three different parts that i took out of and i wanted to hit on all three. The first was isolation and self reflection, the second was a view on whats now and in the present, and the third is a look into the future. I tried to get all three of these qualities into my space. The closed of view from the front and back plus the excavated ground hits on the first part. The open views on the side and the fact that its not completely closed off links to the second part. The view up through the slots gives the reader the idea of looking into the future; the poem metaphorically talks about seeing storm clouds approaching.

Its interesting for me because what I got from the poem is actually the we really need each other to survive and that our greatest wealth and strength is each other, or community.
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, I see you have crafted a well made model and the photos are pretty good for taking them on your desk. The space you've designed works in its intent in its relationship to the ground and the large imposing wall slanting over the seat. The open sides possibly work against the attempt at isolation, but would serve to merge our two interpretations of the poem into one space - where one goes to be alone, but never loses his or her connection to the world around them.
It would be helpful to prepare a better space for photographing your work, with more control over the lighting and background.
I agree with the comments of Doug and would be interested in further exploration of what you call the second view. Although I do like the simplicity of the two simple forms, the vertical element and roof/screen element, I would be interested in how a more expressed/controlled view would add to the notion of the individual in the space, both the controlled view out but also the view in. This could be done a number of ways that strengthens the overall concept and physical articulation of materials and forms.
