Poems

Alone

I chose this poem for a few reasons. When I was reading it i could instantly start to picture what this setting would look like. The poem has alot of emotion in it and the ideas it has were ones that I agree with. I want to pick something I have a passion for and feeling I can relate to; that leads to better work which is something we all strive for.

After I was done reading it I just picture what the poet was talking about, rich and wealthy people who have all this money but are alone in this world. No matter what you have or where you come from lonliness haunts us all and when you are alone you will truly live an unhappy life. When i was reading this poem I pictured someone sitting in a desolate and isolated room. A setting in which they were alone and could view the world and people around them who might not have what the person in the room has but are happy none the less.

Somehere I have never travelled

This poem I chose mostly because of the detail and picture it creates in my head. The words this poet uses depict such an image, especially in the first two paragraphs. That is really what sold me on this work. I found myself rereading the way he describes the opening of this flowers petals again and again.

When I read this poem I pictured someone talking about their significant other as someone they have never been with before, or maybe a personallity they never found attractive until now. It talks about how they open up like a flower in spring or close and shut very beautifully. I found the opening up was more appealing to me as a reader.

For this design i wanted to focus on the feeling the poem Alone was portraying. I thought what the environment would look like if someone felt alone and was writing or reading this poem. The stairs are all seperate pieces that would be used as my elements. On my full scale study model there will be some kind of barrier to seperate the middle even more. That is where the bench will be for the reader to sit.

In the poem Alone there are three main parts to it, self reflection, a view on what is now and happening in front of her, and a view into the future. I thought about this concept and created three spaces that each represent these concepts. The first is an isolated room, no windows only a door to enter. The second is open up to see what is outside but is still blocked off from what is going on. The last is completely open and high above the ground to allow one to see far into the distance. That is where the reader will be set up with a bench. Details were hard in this one because it was pretty small scale and the cardboard is hard to cut when your tryin to work in details.

Just another study model.

This is what im going to base my final project on. You walk down into it and it is very difficult to see into the space and you feel very surrounded while your in there but the top is very open to allow light in.

Here is my to scale study model. There are still some things i am going to change and tweak a little bit though. For instance the stairs will start before you enter the space and the wall behind the space will be simplified.

  1. Craig - I think you have a concept of the poetry and you have a strong design intent. However, I can not tell which model is the one you are going with. Is it the one that you have 4 photos of, or is it the one above that? Based on your comments, I think it is the one above the 4 photos, because I don't see how the last model relates to your comments. You need to make sure you are able to "back up" your design.
